SCHOOL OF DANCE CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Creative Movement (Ages 3-6) |
A program designed to develop large and small muscle groups, motor skills, attention span, and creativity in movement |
Pre-Ballet I, II, III
(Ages 6,7,7+) |
A fun, progressive program that teaches correct classic technique in a light-hearted manner. Students learn the basic 5 arm and leg positions and holding positions. Emphasis is placed on turnout, correct placement of feet, consistency, and repetition with correct terminology. |
Ballet I, II, III
(Ages 8+, Pre-Ballet is a prerequisite for younger ages) |
A classic study developing placement, technique, and the dancer’s creativity, with continuation of skills developed in Pre-Ballet. Using the correct 5 basic positions, we teach proper movement through the feet and arms to create fluidity. A solid half hour is spent on the barre, working specific technique which is then applied to another half hour of center and across floor exercises. Emphasis is maintained on correct upper body posture and placement with every exercise. Proper use of terminology is a must. |
Pre Pointe
(teacher approval required) |
Includes correct application of pointe shoes (e.g. lacing), care of shoes, and general rules. Work is done to strengthen the feet to allow for easy movement on pointe shoes. |
Pointe
(teacher approval required) |
Focuses on systematic repetition on exercises at the barre and center to improve strength and agility in order to master a movement. Includes advanced combinations at both the barre and center to test speed, memory and overall dance ability. |
Jazz
(Ages 6 & up) |
Jazz dance has been called “music made visible in dancers”. Jazz is a fun and eclectic genre of dance that draws on many other styles in forming its technique and expressive styles. While it incorporates elements of ballet, including alignment, it also relies on modern dance and contemporary styles like hip-hop to augment the movement.
Jazz dance uses almost every genre of music, from classic swing and Broadway jazz to current popular music. This is an energetic, dynamic form of dance, suitable for everyone who wants to get moving. |
Tap
(Ages 4 & up) |
Tap is America's folk dance with roots in Irish step dancing and African Juba. The rhythm tap technique is based on the styles of the first generation 'hoofers' of Vaudeville, jazz clubs and Broadway with the contemporary exploration of the concert stage. Tradition is taught with an emphasis on musicality, relaxation and individuality. |
Hip Hop
(Ages 10+) |
A breathtaking mix of fast, intricate footwork, graceful spins, and even some acrobatic movements that combine to create a style of dance that is "urban" and "funky" while enjoying the distinct rhythm and music known as Hip-Hop. This class combines styles of Hip-Hop, Street Jazz, Pop and Lock, and Breakdance while exploring choreographers known for their work in the field of Hip-Hop. Lyrics are carefully screened for appropriateness. |
Musical Theater
(Ages 10-14) |
Students explore and learn the three major components of Music Theater: Singing, Acting, and Dancing. Students also study hands-on the art of Scenic and Costume Design while preparing a production. |
